I’ll Go Downstairs with You is a collaborative piece between me and my grandmother, Xiaoping Zhang.
One side features my oil painting of swallows—symbols of longing, migration, and return. The other side shows her imagined pairs of black birds, which she used to paint on the backs of my middle school exam papers, and which continue to reappear in her work.
Mounted on a door hinge, the piece can rotate, like a door quietly opening and closing—just like every visit I make to her. Her words, “I’ll go downstairs with you,” mark each farewell.
